Inaugural SME Inward Programme held at the Scottish Parliament
4th November 2010

Three companies, who are members of the Scottish Parliament and Business Exchange, from Scottish Investment Operations, SELECT, and Hydrologic attended the Inaugural SME Inward Programme day hosted at the Scottish Parliament. The focus of the day was to allow the delegates to gain a greater understanding of the Scottish Parliament and how it interacts with the Scottish economy.
The programme started with a welcome from Alasdair Morgan MSP in his role as a Deputy Presiding Officer for The Scottish Parliament. This was followed by a session led by Susan Duffy, Clerk to the Local Government and Communities Committee. The first part of this session revolved around what the Parliament does and how the committee structure works. There was then a detailed discussion about recent issues that the committee had discussed, and also the implications of emergency legislation along with the some of the possible impacts that the Calman changes might bring to the Scottish Parliament
The delegates then visited the main debating chamber in the Parliament to observe First Minister’s Questions.
Following lunch there were two sessions in the afternoon. Firstly, Duncan McNeil MSP spoke about the Local Government and Communities Committee in his role as Convenor, as well as going into much more detail about the value of Committees and why their role in scrutiny was so important to the Legislative process. This was followed by Linda Fabiani MSP who spoke about the role and responsibilities of being a Member of the Scottish Parliament, as well as entering into discussion on a number of other themes which had come up that day.
