MSPs visit Royal Bank of Scotland

12th March 2010

Six MSPs today attended an Outward Programme with the Royal Bank of Scotland – presented by the Scottish Parliament & Business Exchange.  Alasdair Morgan MSP, Liam McArthur MSP, Derek Brownlee MSP, Hugh O’Donnell MSP, Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP, and Andy Kerr MSP  visited RBS’s headquarters at Gogarburn in order to have the opportunity to discuss in detail a wide variety of issues facing RBS and its stakeholders, with a focus on the future direction of the group, support for personal and business customers through the downturn, jobs and an assessment of economic prospects for Scotland, the rest of the UK and the wider international community.

After an introduction, the MSPs received a briefing on RBS by Stephen Moir, Head of Research and briefings, and then contributed to a session on ‘the Future of Banking Reform’, led by Ralph Ricks, Head of Group Regulatory Risk Development, & Peter Melling, Head of External Risk.  This was followed by a session on RBS’ approach to sustainability delivered by Andrew Cave, Head of Corporate Sustainability for RBS.

The afternoon commenced with a discussion led by Stephen Boyle, Head of Economics on the impact of public spending cuts upon the regions, which was followed by a session on Governance changes at RBS delivered by Aileen Taylor, Deputy Group Secretary.

Speaking after the visit, Andy Kerr MSP said:

“A very valuable experience for all us. For the businesses a chance to understand more about our role, but crucially our opportunity to gain a much deeper insight into key businesses in Scotland, meeting face to face, on site in the business environment beats emails, briefings and receptions!”
